What Is our Guardian Program?
Our guardian program is a special arrangement between Box of Love Kennels and a carefully selected family, where the family agrees to raise and care for a breeder-owned dog as their beloved pet. In return, the dog remains part of the breeder's program for a limited time, usually for breeding purposes.
How It Works:
1. Placement: Box of Love Kennels will place a top-quality puppy or young adult dog with a guardian home at no cost. This dog will live with the guardian family full-time as their own pet.
2. Care and Responsibility: The guardian family is responsible for the dog’s day-to-day care, including feeding, training, socialization, and regular vet check-ups.
3. Breeding Rights: While the dog is under the guardian program, Box of Love Kennels retains the legal rights for a set number of litters (for females) or breeding opportunities (for males). All breeding and medical expenses related to the breeding process are covered by Box of Love Kennels.
4. Health Testing: Before breeding, the dog will undergo health testing, paid for by Box of Love Kennels. This ensures the dog is fit for breeding and meets the breeder's standards.
5. Breeding Process: Females: When it’s time to breed, the dog will stay with Box of Love Kennels during mating and whelping (birth and raising of puppies), usually for about 6–8 weeks.
Males: Male dogs may be called upon for short visits for stud services.
6. Retirement and Ownership Transfer: Once the breeding obligations are fulfilled (typically after 2–4 litters for females or a set number of years for males), the dog is spayed/neutered at the breeder's expense, and full ownership is permanently transferred to the guardian family.
